Born in Yamagata, Japan, Goto Izumi sings and plays the accordion under the name Goto Izumi+Accordion. Having played in several bands in Fukuoka, she moved to Okinawa, then subsequently to Hiroshima where she started a new band, Nekomushi—a self described "freak-show band" that she toured with, including a concert at the SXSW festival in Austin, Texas. Untrained, Goto Izumi has since 2004 made a career through her idiosyncratic performances accompanied only by the accordion.
